Symptoms of AMD

AMD is presented in 2 forms Dry and Wet. Regardless of which form of AMD may be developing, neither cause the individual any pain. Both Dry and Wet AMD are entirely painless, compromising only central vision.

Symptoms for Dry AMD

In the early stages of dry AMD, the individual may experience nothing at all. It is possible to be in the first stage or Early AMD and have no loss or blurring of vision. In the early stage of dry AMD, the only detectable symptom may be the presence of Drusen. During early AMD, several small Drusen, or a few Midsized Drusen are present, and exposed only during a comprehensive dilated eye exam. As there is no pain associated with AMD and the presence of Drusen is not, in and of itself, the cause of vision loss, there may be no detectable indication of the progressing compromised central vision. As AMD advances in the early stages, slightly blurred vision will occur. You may experience difficulty reading, require more light while performing daily tasks, and have difficulty recognizing familiar faces. The central vision will begin to deteriorate as AMD advances causing a central spot of blurred vision, which will grow and darken as the macula (advise inserting definition of macula linked to the word) gradually breaks down.

Symptoms for Wet AMD

Wet AMD, also know as advance AMD, will result in the loss of central vision at a rapid rate. Unlike dry AMD, wet AMD does not advance in stages. An early indication of wet AMD is “straight lines appearing wavy”. Should straight lines being to appear wavy, or other noticeable changes in your vision occur, contact an eye care specialist immediately to schedule a comprehensive dilated eye exam. The rapid loss of central vision is due to the formation of abnormal blood vessels forming behind the retina, leaking blood and fluid, displacing the proper positioning of the macula. Wet AMD advances quickly as the damage to the macula occurs rapidly.
